I realize I've talking about TRUE MINERAL SUNSCREEN since before we even launched in 2023! But I also realized today maybe not everyone understands what TRUE Mineral Sunscreen means! I spent thousands of dollars on sunscreen before I understood what I was actually buying. After my daughter had a severe reaction to a sunscreen labeled specifically "for babies," I became obsessed with finding something safe. I read every label. I bought every brand that said "mineral" or "100% mineral" or "clean" or "gentle for sensitive skin." And she kept reacting.

It took me a long time to understand why. And when I finally did, I felt genuinely angry on behalf of every parent who trusted those labels. Here's what I learned.
The Label Problem Nobody Talks About
The sunscreen industry is built on a loophole, and most consumers have no idea it exists. When you see "100% mineral" on the front of a bottle, you probably assume the product contains no chemical UV filters. That's a reasonable assumption. It's also, in most cases, wrong.
96% of sunscreens on the market, even the ones claiming to be 100% mineral, contain hidden chemical UV filters. Not in the active ingredient list. In the inactive ingredients, buried where most people never look.

These hidden ingredients are called uv chemical boosters. And they are the reason I spent four years and more than 50 formula iterations building Daily Shade.
What Are UV Chemical Boosters?
Boosters are chemical ingredients that are structurally almost identical to traditional UV chemical filters like avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octinoxate. The difference is that they aren't classified as active UV filters by the FDA, so brands don't have to list them as actives. They live in the inactive ingredients list, invisible to most shoppers.
The most common UV chemical boosters you'll find hiding in "mineral" sunscreens:
Butyloctyl salicylate (BOS). One of the most widely used. Structurally nearly identical to octyl salicylate, a registered chemical UV filter. Improves SPF performance and gives the formula that smooth, lightweight feel that makes a mineral sunscreen seem more like a chemical one.
Ethylhexyl methoxyacrylate. A UV-absorbing photostabilizer that extends the SPF rating and prevents other UV filters from breaking down. It is doing UV work. It is just not labeled that way.
Tridecyl salicylate. Another salicylate-class UV absorber that amplifies SPF numbers and improves spreadability. Same family as chemical UV filters. Same mechanism of action.
Diethylhexyl syringylidenemalonate. A photostabilizer that prevents UV-induced degradation in the formula. Again, UV-absorbing activity, inactive ingredient classification.
These aren't benign fillers. They absorb UV radiation. They amplify SPF readings. They are in these formulas because they work like chemical UV filters, and that is the entire point of adding them.
The problem is that because they aren't registered as actives, they haven't been tested under the same FDA safety protocols. There is very little data on what they do in the body over time. Some generate reactive oxygen species under sunlight, meaning they can add oxidative stress to the skin rather than protecting it. And because boosters function as penetration enhancers, they can push other ingredients deeper into the skin layers and bloodstream than a true mineral formula ever would.
None of that is disclosed anywhere on the front of the bottle.
What TRUE Mineral Means

A true mineral sunscreen means not only are the ONLY active ingredients either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide BUT ALSO it is FREE OF UV CHEMICAL BOOSTERS (all those complicated names listed above).
At Daily Shade we focus on non-nano zinc oxide as our only active ingredient. Non-nano zinc oxide works differently than every other filter on the market. It sits on top of the skin and physically deflects UV radiation at the surface because it's particle size is larger than a pore size and it doesn't get absorbed. It starts working immediately upon application. It's photostable, meaning it doesn't degrade in sunlight. It provides full-spectrum coverage against UVA1, UVA2, and UVB from a single ingredient.
It is also one of only two UV filters the FDA has recognized as Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective (GRASE) alongside titanium dioxide. For Daily Shade, we only use non-nano zinc. I chose not to include titanium dioxide because aerosolized titanium has raised concerns in some studies, including a Prop 65 warning in California for the inhaled form. When in doubt, I leave it out.
Why Brands Use Boosters (And Why We Don't)
The honest answer is that true mineral sunscreen is incredibly hard to formulate without them. Non-nano zinc is thick. It's white. It sits on the skin in a way that can look pasty and greasy if you don't know what you're doing. That "white ghost" look has been the thing keeping people from using mineral sunscreen for decades. Boosters solve that problem cheaply and easily, which is why 96% of the market uses them.
It took us four years and over 50 iterations to figure out how to make a true mineral formula that disappears on the skin, feels lightweight, and doesn't leave a residue. That's why our formula is patented. That work is genuinely hard, and most brands aren't willing to do it.
